Ostomy Education

Ostomy education is developed using principles of the average adults' learning capabilities including taking into consideration the learners' receptiveness, ability, and need to learn.

Such teaching will incorporate specific strategies intended to promote cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning with strategies incorporated to overcome possible cultural barriers. Clinical nurse specialists in ostomy and stoma care are in the best position to work with the patients' cognitive factors by implementing a wide range of strategies that include effective practical teaching skills to empower patients, in turn facilitating the mental adjustment that follows stoma surgery.

Ostomy education for patients undergoing stoma surgery is an important aspect to surgery results before and after their surgery. A stoma care nurse helps patients adjust and come to terms with the surgery is a vital part of ostomy education and success.
