Ostomy Education

Ostomy education is developed using principles of the average adults' learning capabilities including taking into consideration the learners' receptiveness, ability, and need to learn.

Such teaching will incorporate specific strategies intended to promote cognitive, affective, and psychomotor learning with strategies incorporated to overcome possible cultural barriers. In addition, adjustments may be made to take into account the needs of disabled or elderly patients who have trouble processing information or low literacy skills. Finally, ostomy education should include an assessment of its effectiveness. There are reviews of general guidelines for setting up, putting in place, and evaluating patient education geared to adult patients with ostomies.

Patients undergoing any type of ostomy surgery have to make major mental and physical adjustments after the surgery. Research shows that with early education of stoma care and education it reduces problems, therefore, a critical apprehension for hospital-based stoma care nurses.

Many educational facilities aim to educate nurses on how to properly teach stoma care. By attending ongoing courses, the nurse specialist can better utilize teaching opportunities during the pre-operative and post-operative periods of ostomy surgeries. Educating the patient should be approached carefully and in an organized manner. Using sound principles of teaching with learning and implementing teaching plans where applicable to make sure that no vital information is left out.

Realistic learning outcomes should be started during the patients first consultation with the doctor. The patient's ability and receptiveness can be evaluated during this time. Change of information between the hospital and the patient will aid in learning and the support process is continued after being discharged from the hospital. This very important process promotes positive adjustments to stoma formation in turn making a successful rehabilitation more likely.

Ostomy education studies have confirmed that patients who are pleased with the amount of information they receive before surgery are less likely to experience psychological problems. Mental adjustments may be altered if patients think that they have not received sufficient pouch changing skills or have difficulties with leakage from their pouch or irritated skin around their stoma. Studies have also verified that cognitive factors, like that of patients feeling in control of their situation and stoma, have been known to be a major role in their psychological adaptation of their ostomy. Clinical nurse specialists in ostomy and stoma care are in the best position to work with the patients' cognitive factors by implementing a wide range of strategies that include effective practical teaching skills to empower patients, in turn facilitating the mental adjustment that follows stoma surgery.

Ostomy education for patients undergoing stoma surgery is an important aspect to surgery results before and after their surgery. A stoma care nurse helps patients adjust and come to terms with the surgery is a vital part of ostomy education and success.
