Ostomy Supplies

Finding the correct type of ostomy supplies will be an essential factor for living with an ostomy. After an ostomy surgery, you will leave the hospital with a particular brand of ostomy equipment. Lots of people will continue on with their initial brand. However, there are many manufacturers of ostomy supplies, as well as many ways to obtain them. Your ostomy nurse will be a great source of information.

When it comes time for you to obtain your ostomy supplies your choice of both supply types and where you choose to buy them of is limited only by your own individual requirements, and in some cases, may be limited by the type of medical insurance you carry. Medicare and many health insurance companies will require certain restrictions on the purchase of ostomy supplies. If you are a Medicare client, an important decision inchoosing a supplier will be if they accept Medicare. You'll want to check with your insurance before your surgery to determine just what they will cover.

Some things to think about when selecting the ostomy supplies is to consult your ostomy doctor and nurse so they can steer you the right direction for items that fit your particular situation. You need to remember everyone is unique and that you will need to find what ostomy products will work best for you. It is often necessary to experiment with various types of products through different manufacturers that make the same item. Most manufacturers have toll free phone numbers that you can call and ask for samples of items to try before you have to buy. Most product suppliers may have an ostomy nurse or specialist that can help you with pertinent information and recommendations.

If there is a problem with your ostomy supplies, they will usually be one of two things. A problem is a tear or pinholes in the pouching material, damaged wafers and/or flanges, or broken tail clips; then you should call the place you bought the item or call the manufacturer. The other issue might be incompatibility due to allergic reactions or perhaps a size adjustment would be necessary if you have a change in your weight. Another could be a reaction to tape or materials of the pouch or leakage in which case talk to your ostomy nurse and call the store or manufacturer.

As you make your adjustment to a different way of living, you will be faced with the task of obtaining the ostomy supplies that will help you adjust and move forward. Learn as much as you can before undergoing surgery including the right supplier, looking at the range of brands, price, ease of use and accessibility, special services, insurance reimbursement, and what to do with unused supplies.
