Medicare Coverage of Ostomy Supplies

Medicare coverage of ostomy supplies can be obtained. However, there are some conditions that have to be met prior to medicare covering any or all of the supplies you will need and there may be some limitations to the coverage. Medicare will cover some ostomy supplies for those who have to have an ileostomy, colostomy or an ostomy for the bladder.

Medicare will cover the quantity of supplies that your doctor may say you will need depending on your condition. There will probably be a co-payment required. They will pay twenty percent of medicare approved amounts.

There are two parts to medicare. Part A and part B. Part A is for the time you are in the hospital and part B will cover after you are sent home from the medical facility. The name of the organization that is associated with this topic is called durable medical equipment regional carrier abbreviated by the letters DMERC.

For Medicare coverage of ostomy supplies part B you will have to pay one hundred dollars as an annual deductible for part B services and prior to Medicare paying their share. This amount can be more if the health care provider, doctor, or supplier does not work with Medicare patients.

Medicares coverage of ostomy supplies has specific information that has to be included in the doctor's request for ostomy supplies. They have to state your diagnosis, an approximation of the amount needing to be used per section of time, a reason for any amounts larger than the average quantity, and of course the doctors date and signature. The doctor will be required to provide a written order for the ostomy supplies, a change in quantity that might be needed per section of time, or the type of supplies used.

An ostomy supplier has to keep on file the doctor's orders that is dated and signed and the 9th revision of the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical modification (ICD-9-CM) which is the diagnosis that describes the ostomy type. The supplier also have accessibility to the clients medical record and submit them to DMERC when ever they are requested to send them. These records also have to show the hospital, doctor's office, home health agency, nursing homes, or other health professional.

Medicares coverage of ostomy supplies has changed over time. The newer policies help ostomy suppliers better serve the patient as it covers a wider spectrum of supplies covered. This in turn helps the patient benefit from technology that is available. Also with the updated policies will gain benefit from a new pectin-based skin barrier rate and code. It will not be necessary to pay 100 percent of the cost for this, which is an important product for ostomy patients.
