An ostomy is the surgical means of making an opening in your body to necessitate the discharge of bodily wastes. A stoma is the last part of the bowel or ureter that extends through the abdominal wall. Three common ostomies are colostomies for an opening for the large intestine, ileostomies for the small intestine, and urostomies for the bladder to empty. Any of these are surgically created and can be a temporary or permanent solution depending on the situation.

Caring for an ostomy is very important. It will need to be emptied and cleaned when needed. Changing the appliance every 4-7 days will be a part of your routine. For children it will need changing more often. Taking care of the skin around the stoma will be especially necessary watching for irritation or signs of infection. A colostomy may be irrigated after consulting with a health professional.
